Beloved Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek shocked the world in March when he revealed that he was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. The 78-year-old television game-show icon vowed to fight the disease despite a 9% survival rate. Now we are finding out that Trebek has been responding very well to chemotherapy and in an interview with People magazine he revealed that his cancer is now in “near remission.”

“It’s kind of mind-boggling, the doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory…some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”

Trebek will continue with rounds of chemotherapy with a goal of reaching complete remission, according to People. In April, Trebek said in a message to Jeopardy! viewers that he’s looking forward to returning for the next season of the show, scheduled to begin in September.

“I’ve always tried to be straight with you and I’m not going to stop now, so despite what you may have heard, I’m feeling good. I’m continuing with my therapy, and we – and by we, the staff – is already working on our next season, the 36th season of Jeopardy! So I look forward to seeing you once again in September with all kinds of good stuff.”
