Stranded Mother Benefits From The Kindness of Two VCSO Deputies

New Smyrna Beach, FL – Two Volusia Sheriff’s deputies took the time and the money to help out a stranded Orlando mother and her two children, ages 2-year-old and 5 months on Tuesday (November 6).

The deputies were alerted to the family’s plight by an off-duty Seminole Sheriff’s deputy who said the woman was observed driving with the infant on her lap and asking for help at the BP station at the corner of S.R. 44 and S.R. 415.

The woman told the deputies that she was driving to the beach for a few days and planned to rent an Airbnb in New Smyrna Beach. She was going to use her debit card to pay for it but her ID and the debit card were stolen in Orlando. The woman told the deputies that she was asking for money to buy gas.

The deputies noticed she had only a toddler car seat in her vehicle but no car seat for the infant. One of the deputies went to Wal-Mart and bought a seat for the baby. The deputy installed the new seat and adjusted the toddler’s seat. The BP station provided food and water for the family.

Deputies determined that the mother had no place to stay. Arrangements were made for them to stay at a hotel in Edgewater, which was paid for by the other deputy. The deputies followed the mother and her children to the hotel and helped them check-in.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood praised the dedication and generosity of his deputies who stepped in to help a citizen in need. He said all involved will receive letters of recommendation.
