Like many other tracks from The Cars, “Just What I Needed” originated as a demo tape recorded in 1977. Written by Ocasek in the basement of the commune he lived in at the time. You may have heard rhe opening riff was borrowed from the novelty song, “Yummy Yummy Yummy” but did you know the lyric, “wasting all my time-time” is a reference to “Sister Ray” by the Velvet Underground, a band Ocasek credited as one of his favorites.
Today’s clip comes from the cars performing live in front of 100,000 people at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia for LIVE AID. The event was organized by Sir Bob Geldof to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. LIVE AID featured shows in both Philadelphia and London on the same day and was broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time. In fact, the estimate is that just under two billion people watched LIVE AID that day, or around 40% of the global population.
